*AHA Training Updates Related to COVID-19*

For AHA original and recertification testing:

The AHA has issued guidance that employers may extend an expiration date of a provider’s ACLS, BCLS or PALS card for up to 60 days due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. We strongly recommend that employers follow this guidance.    AHA documentation can be found here.

Colonie EMS will perform skills for ACLS/BCLS/PALS testing in a 1 on 1 scenario in order to meet the increased demand for providers due to the reactivation of retired and former health care providers, changing of duties of certain health care providers to more acute areas, agencies that require valid ACLS/BCLS/PALS certification and those providers that work for agencies not willing to extend expiration dates

If providers need recertification or skills testing for original certification, Colonie EMS will provide testing as follows:

For those providers with a VALID card (or one that has expired in the last 60 days), Colonie EMS will perform skills testing and a written examination when the following conditions are met:

  • The Healthcare Provider signs an attestation statement that they are free from COVID-19 signs and symptoms and have not been exposed to a known COVID-19 patient or suspected COVID-19 patient while not wearing appropriate PPE
  • The health care provider will submit to a check of their temperature prior to entering the testing facility and wash their hands
  • Health care provider agrees to wear a surgical mask for the duration of skills and written testing
  • The health care provider EMAILS a copy of their VALID (or recently expired) provider card prior to the testing session
  • Please note there is no remediation available for those with expired cards. You will be referred to the original HEARTCODE course online if you fail testing.

For those providers without a current and valid card (expired in the last 60 days) or who have not previously had certification in the desired discipline, Colonie EMS will perform skills testing and a written examination when the following conditions are met:

  • Complete the appropriate HEARTCODE online portion of their desired class
    • Available here, fee is over and above the skills portion fee
  • EMAIL a course completion certificate
  • The health care provider signs an attestation statement that they are free from COVID-19 signs and symptoms and have not been exposed to a known COVID-19 patient or suspected COVID-19 patient while not wearing appropriate PPE
  • The health care provider will submit to a check of their temperature prior to entering the testing facility and wash their hands
  • The health care provider agrees to wear a surgical mask for the duration of the skills and written testing

Testing will be conducted in a 1 on 1 situation only in a large classroom. All manikins have single use lungs, which are disposed of after each use and manikin surfaces are disinfected after each use. AED and BVM equipment is also disinfected after each use. Written test materials are used once and discarded. Likewise, all surfaces where testing is performed will be decontaminated after use.

Payment must be made in the form of a money order made payable to the Town of Colonie. This will allow for us to quarantine the paper product to maintain the safety of our administrative staff.

BCLS skills session – $50

ACLS skills session – $100

PALS skills session – $100
